Today we watched the Super Bowl, although neither one of us really cared much about it. On one hand, the Patriots could have been undefeated, which would have been great. After all, everybody knows - it's great to be a winner. On the other hand, who doesn't pull for the underdog, and after the press shredded Eli Manning all year, a lot of America was pulling for him to make a great PR come-back by sticking it to those buggers. And he did. Yep it was great.
But ... even all that greatness wasn't enough to keep us from watching another movie -- one of the classic Charles Bronson movies, "Death Wish - 5." The afternoon was spent switching from the movie to the game and back watching a great battle on the playing field and a great battle between good and evil. Of course, the line is kind of blurred in this movie about what the definition of "good" is. This movie does a great job of making you hate the bad guys enough that you accept the vigilante tactics of the hero and cheer when he gets revenge. In the end, you feel great about the bad guys getting their just desserts.
It's all great. Until the feelings wear off. In a week the Super Bowl will be yesterday's news. In a day, the papers will again be filled with stories of evildoers doing evil in the world. Very short lived greatness.
The greatest thing about this weekend was the worship service this morning, the encounter with God in worship, the excellent teaching from God's Word, and the launch of our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting campaign. The great thing about encountering God is that His work in us is life changing, and that doesn't wear off. Anytime we are willing to set aside time to be in God's presence, to sacrifice in order to grow spiritually, our awareness of God is sharpened and we are transformed.
Get the devotional book, "Love to Pray" by Dr. Alvin VanderGriend. Although he is a member of the Reformed Church and is of a Calvinistic bent, the book so far doesn't go there; it is a simple guide to strengthen your prayer life. Why don't you join us in prayer this next 40 days? It will be great!
